Caregiving must arise
from the depths of the heart.
If these depths are not tapped,
ideas such as «duty» and «loyalty»
take their place.
When duty and loyalty are exalted,
true caregiving disappears.
These things are an empty shell
and not adequate for meeting the challenge
of life’s unwelcome changes.
You cannot give another person
happiness without sadness,
comfort without pain, gain without loss,
or life without death.
Do not try.
Let your helping be without agenda.
Let the natural course of things unfold.
Do what you do,
and think no more about it.
This will bring freedom
to giver and reciever alike.
